Gurinder and Terani played a monumental role in developing a breakthrough technology called ‘Table-based Data Speculation Circuit for Parallel Processing Computer’. Simply put, a technology to enhance the processing powers of a computer. The research and development was undertaken at Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation in 1998, and the university filed a valid patent back then.
In January 2014, WARF (Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation) pressed charges against Apple on the grounds of illegally using the patented technology in A7, A8, and A8X chips, the technology that powers the iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and the new iPhone 6S. The case will proceed in 3 phases, namely, liability, damages, and willful infringement. Apple has already been directed by the court of law to cough up a massive $400 million in the damages phase. As the case enters the other two phases, Apple is likely to be slapped with another $400 million payout.
