Next release of Linux Kernel to be called Linux 3.0

Yes ,it is ! the next release of the Linux Kernel will be Linux 3.0 !!

How it happened ?

             Few days back, Linus sent a mail to the Linux Kernel Mailing List. It was a reminder that the merge window was smaller than usual this time as he would be away in the coming weeks. But what became news was a PS in the mail :

                “The voices in my head also tell me that the numbers are getting too big. I may just call the thing 2.8.0. And I almost guarantee that this PS is going to result in more discussion than the rest, but when the voices tell me to do things, I listen.”

This obviously started off a lot of discussion in and outside the mailing list and finally, Linus made this announcement

“I decided to just bite the bullet, and call the next version 3.0. It will get released close enough to the 20-year mark, which is excuse enough for me, although honestly, the real reason is just that I can no longer comfortably count as high as 40.”

 So the linux kernel version number which was heading to 2.6.40 is now 3.0. Thats it.
